Annual South East Stroke Report Card Tells a Good News Story

A recently released provincial report indicates that patient and families from across the South East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) are benefiting from improved access to hyperacute treatment and stroke unit care.

According to new data released by CorHealth Ontario, the South East LHIN continues to show the biggest improvement in 30-day mortality rate following an acute stroke.  The South East also has the lowest readmission rate of all 14 LHINs.

The SE Report Card indicates that the SE Region has top/exemplary performance in many areas:

  • Arrival at the ED by ambulance, though continued focus is needed to build public awareness of stroke recognition using  FAST.
  • Thrombolysis rates
  • Stroke unit care utilization rates
  • Number of Home and Community-based rehabilitation Visits

Further work is needed in the central and east parts of the region to improve inpatient rehabilitation access and flow. Related actions are included in Regional Stroke Workplan. The Stroke Network of Southeastern Ontario is committed to working with patients, families and all partners to continuously improve stroke prevention and  care in this region.
