Part 1- March 11, 2026- 0930-1200h

Part 2- April 1, 2026- 0930-1200h

Learning objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to

  1. Describe the different electrical stimulation parameters and how each affects the neurophysiological response.
  2. Identify neurological patients that would be appropriate candidates for FES.
  3. Begin setting and manipulating electrical stimulation parameters appropriately for FES applications.
  4. Position electrodes appropriately for FES applications.
  5. Apply one-channel FES applications to upper and lower limb muscles.

Target Audience: Occupational and Physical Therapists working with stroke clients in Southeastern Ontario

Session Plan:

  1. Basics of Electrical Stimulation (covering content from Modules 1-6)
    • ~1 hr 30 min lecture content (includes 10 min break)
    • ~45 min guided hands-on practice plus 15 min debrief 
  2. Intro to FES (covering Module 7 and highlights from Modules 8 & 9)
    • ~45 min lecture on FES and clinical decision-making
    • ~30 min guided hands-on practice of case studies
    • ~30 min lecture of highlights of specific upper and lower limb applications
    • ~30 min overview of use of FES in spasticity management

Please Note that participants must have access to a Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) unit at a ratio of 1 unit per 2-4 participants for the practice component of the session.
